Havana, Cuba, is an incredible city. With a party atmosphere and bizarrely quirky ‘run down’ look about it, it’s instantly recognisable on photographs. If you’re lucky enough to be around Havana in an evening, here are 5 bars you simply have to visit.
1. La Bodeguita del Medio
Touting itself as ‘the home of the Mojito,’ it’s hardly surprising that La Bodeguita del Medio serves a brilliant one! This was a regular haunt of Ernest Hemingway and Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. It’s a bar and restaurant located in the oldest part of the city. People who visit sign their names on the walls (both outside and in). It’s a tiny place that also serves food.
2. El Floridita
Another of Ernest Hemingway’s haunts, this bar is often overrun with tourists. Let’s be honest – it’s an overpriced bar and the cocktails are no better than cheaper nearby establishments. But just so say you’ve been, you should definitely go, enjoy a mojito and take some snaps.
3. Hotel Nacional
The world famous Hotel Nacional is a beautiful building. In the 1950s, you could be sure that the vast majority of the many visiting American celebrities and gangsters would spend their time in the City staying at this hotel. There are two bars within the hotel itself (and 3 restaurants). Of course, you get the hallmark cocktails you’ll associate with this Cuban city by now, and you’ll also benefit from some of the finest views in the land.
4. La Mina Terraza
This is a bar that’s as popular with the locals as with the tourists. It’s a really chilled out little place. It has a beautiful outdoor sitting area where you can watch people pass by on the plaza. It has other outdoor space towards the back as well. Day or night, you can be sure of good cocktails and a relaxed atmosphere.
5. Casa de la Amistad
You’ll find Case de la Amistad in Old Havana. As well as being a bar, this place is also a cafe and a cigar shop. Again, brilliant cocktails at decent prices. It’s a live music venue as well, so your cocktails could be accompanied by beautiful Cuban sounds. The bar is actually located in a historic building that was formerly the House of Friendship between the Former Soviet Union and Cuba.
